For a while, Bob Newhart had expressed a desire to collaborate with Chuck Lorre, and when a screenplay for “The Big Bang Theory” was provided, he was granted the opportunity to do so. His only request was that it would be filmed in front of a live audience.

In an August 2013 interview with Gold Derby, the actor shares that he had a recurring role on “The Big Bang Theory”. This would occur in Season 6, Episode 22. During the episode, he asked Lorre if he would announce that “Newhart” was appearing in this show. Lorre replied that he wouldn’t and that the audience would discover it as they watched. When it aired, there was applause and a standing ovation for “Newhart.”
